Professional Education

Over last several years, I have been actively involved with Chungnam National University(CNU) and Kyungpook National University(KNU) in Korea . I am deeply honored and privileged to be appointed to the Professional/Academic Advisory Committee at the CNU School of Architecture and a Visiting Professor at the KNU School of Architecture under
Visiting Scholar Lecture Series (VSLS) Program invited by Korean government. While my teaching at CNU and KNU, I am very pleased to have had an opportunity to participate in several activities: accreditation procedure promotion based on NAAB criteria, seminars, lectures, crits and juries for the design studios at both Schools.

Moreover, under The Grant Proposal for the WCU (world Class University) program conducted by Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in Korea , I was VERY honored to be nominated as an international faculty member and scholar in all aspects of the KNU School of Architecture’s mission including the development of a strong and relevant externally funded research program to modeling of creative urban-city using convergence design technology for Korea’s urban modernization: “ Development of environmentally creative urban-city-model using convergence technology .” Also, among the tasks are to establish new undergraduate/graduate programs through collaboration between world-renowned international scholars and Korean faculty members to achieve the education system, and to collaborate with Korean faculty members or teaching either short intensive courses or regular classes.

On the other hand, late Emeritus Professor Alexander “Sacha” Erdely , who was one of my great mentors and a thesis advisor with the OSU School of Architecture, was represented as an Exchange Professor with the CNU School under a Fulbright Scholarship in early 1980s: the Biennial Asia Study Program was led by Professor Sacha Erdely at the OSU School. Sacha added immeasurably to the enrichment of the CNU School’s program, providing students and faculty important opportunities to see and experience historic and contemporary examples of some of the finest architecture in the world. Fortunately, I had an opportunity to teach at the same university as a Visiting Professor in 1994 after Sacha’s visit with the CNU School, so I am very eager to follow his international adventures after him as I deeply admire him.

Most importantly, I would like to succeed to Sacha’s venture in Korea in collaboration with your institute. My strong goal, therefore, is in obtaining an inspiring opportunity in Korea, offering the opportunity for a collaborative venture and intensive involvement between Korea, Japan, and the United States in architectural education as well as environmental practice.

Lastly, a strength of Professional Architecture Education is its commitment to a strong professional practice emphasis, educating students specifically for the practice of Architecture and Architectural Engineering and combining a focus on developing individuality, imagination, and creativity in design with professionalism. Another important strength is the focus on instilling a strong work ethic among the students. The School continues to attract outstanding students with high intellectual aptitudes who have a sincere desire to learn. These attributes will help students achieve success. The faculty must help students develop self-motivation and dedication to a goal and the basic virtues of enthusiasm, hard work, intellectual discipline, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Workshop and Critic (CNU, KNU)

As summarized, I suggest that the tradition of excellence for Professional Architecture Education should be retained as follows:

Faculty’s dedication

  • The School’s tradition of achievement and the success of students and graduates are directly related to the faculty’s dedication, and their ability to communicate effectively with one another.
  • The faculty provide the intellectual support, professional expertise, and individual encouragement to each student in order to fulfill their educational needs prior to entering the competitive work place in architecture.

Professional practice approach

  • The School continues to emprise on developing individuality, imagination and creativity in design with professionalism as the School’s primary focus.
  • The faculty committee to excellence in the focused professional educational program that has as its goal the education of young people specifically for the practice of architecture.

Student work ethics: Discipline and Skill

  • The School continues to attract outstanding students with high intellectual aptitudes who have a sincere desire to learn and who exhibit the work ethics which will ensure their own successes.
  • The students develop self-motivation and dedication to a goal, and the basic virtues of eagerness, hard work, intellectual discipline, and commitment to a lifelong professional endeavor; I believe strongly in the fundamental values which help young people to become successful in their chosen career.

Design studio

  • The School provides students with a well-rounded studio-based education accompanied by supporting core areas of emphasis in technology, architectural history/theory, and architectural programming/concept.
  • As a tool nowadays, computer technology is so heavily utilized and integrated into the design experience in the professional program, but yet fundamentally a skill of hand-sketching is needed.
  • It is a School’s value of the setting where students and faculty work most closely together at studios, and where all specialized study and knowledge comes together and is synthesized in design.
